Who Are We?

KMEC radio is part of the Mendocino Environmental Center. The radio station came about in 2002 when it was announced that the FCC was going to be issuing a number of low power radio licenses. A committed group submitted an application and the MEC was awarded one of the licenses. A low power license means the broadcast wattage is maximum 100 watts.

KMEC broadcasts programming that reflects the mission statement of the Mendocino Environmental Center:

The Mendocino Environmental Center (MEC) works through educational outreach, nonviolent direct action and the legal system to uphold and promote environmental and social justice in Mendocino County and beyond. The MEC is a resource center, which offers support to grass roots community groups and empowers individuals to work for positive change. The MEC networks with a politically and socially diverse community, encouraging integrity, tolerance, non violence and a sustainable future.

More about this new "digital" radio station

KMEC is a "digital" radio station. What this basically means is that a computer is a central ingredient of the station. And having a computer in the mix provides some wonderful and intereseting advantages.

First, music as well as pre-programmed shows can be sourced directly from the computer. Using the computer, broadcasting can even be put on "automatic" for a while and a pre-selected configuration of programs can be selected from a large list of choices, including station ids, press releases, music, etc.and qued up for broadcast, a button clicked and away it goes.

Second, the station can "stream" programs in real time directly from the Internet.

Third, the station can download programs directly off the internet for later broadcast, which opens up an enormous amount of information to draw from, and an opportunity for an amazing archive of programming.

Four, KMEC can "broadcast" from literally anywhere there is an internet connection. The signal goes from a microphone into a laptop computer connected to the internet. At the station, the station computer is configured to pick up the "web stream" internet signal and broadcast it directly out over the airways.
